Om ’n akteur, sanger en liedjieskrywer te wees vereis (onder meer) dat ’n mens empatie moet hê – die vermoë om jouself in iemand anders se skoene te plaas. Ek wil jou net vir ‘n oomblik vra om presies dieselfde te doen:
Stel jouself voor, jy is gebore in ‘n omgewing waar jy van kleins af belowe is, dat jy altyd versorg sal word, dat jy geen entrepreneursvaardighede hoef aan te leer nie; dat jy altyd ’n werk, ’n huis, motor, inkomste, bevordering en aftrede sal hê – tot die dag van jou dood. Stel jou voor dat hierdie omgewing (oornag) verander / afbreek; en dat al die bogenoemde beloftes (skielik) nie meer bestaan nie.
Duisende S. A. soldate sit sonder / het geen werk, huis, motor of pensioen nie. Hulle vrouens het hulle verlaat. Baie van hulle het op straat beland, of in agterkamers gewoon en van uitdeelstukke geleef.
In lande soos Amerika en Engeland is soldate wat diens gelewer het
highly regarded, honoured, valued and cared for. In South Africa, there is no port or refuge for ex-soldiers (physically, emotionally and financially); no respect, self esteem, provision or care.
Imagine (for a moment) that you lost your leg or arm, for services rendered to an institution that (1) no longer exists, or (2) still exists, but has no plan in place, to be able to (or will) compensate and care for you.
As Ambassador of the Veterans Aid Fund, I want to ask you to help us, so that we can assist these wounded Veterans with daily, basic survival; as well as acquiring entrepreneurial skills so that they can become self-sufficient again. Your financial and / or intellectual contributions will be appreciated.
